hi phil. one more thought
i have had more of a problem with beach glass than with obsidian, (beach glass is man made glass), bits of bottles, that wash up on the shore,
i am not sure that your theory is supported by this fact,
in otherwords, where is the gas coming from in beach glass, it is probably the same source as in obsidian.
