Another reason Rubbing (Isopropyl) Alcohol doesn't work very well in alcohol lamps is that it is usually 70% water. The brand of denatured alcohol I use indicates that it is ethyl alcohol combined with small amounts of methanol and other chemicals to denature it, making it poisonous and therefore unfit for human consumption. The label also indicates that it contains Ethanol (Ethyl alcohol), Methanol, Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, and Acetone. It also says the use of the product will expose you to Benzene and Toluol, but there is no indication of the concentration of these undesirables.
