Re: need some info on looking for geodes in keokuk

There are lots of areas to hunt. There is a creek that runs East West just a few blocks south of the main street in Hamilton. You can park and collect around the creek. There is another set of creeks that are just south of town that can be found by taking the main street (IL 136) West. Right before the Mississippi river you take a turn to the south (I think it is cr 1200). Find the office to the quarry (not more than a mile)and ask permission to collect in the creek. They don't usually let people into the quarry as it is a working quarry. They will give you directions. Or you can do what I do and stop and ask some of the kids where you can find some. Most streams will have geodes. I always had good luck on the Illinois side. Be careful of snakes in creek beds. Make lots of noise and flip rocks with a rock hammer. Ive never had a problem and have seen few snakes, but they have had flooding this year. You can get a map of all the creeks and streams on google maps or any other.
Good luck
Steve
