Buffing Machine Plans

Hi,

I have a motor (old furnace motor) that I would like to use for a buffing machine. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate any building plans for makeing one from scratch.
I know I need a mounting board, pulleys, back plate, a mouting system for the back plate, belt, and bearings but I'm not sure about the ratio's and spacing.
I've used buffing machines with 12" buffing faces (cerium ox.) down to 6" (diamond) buffing faces but I'm not sure why the size differences (might be a cost issue). I know that RPM speed is very important depending upon the type of buffing material and polishing compound.
I have a Genie but because it runs at one RPM, I would not be able to use it with a variety of buffing materials and polishes. That is why I'm looking to build a buffing machine.
My husband and I are fairly mechanically inclined, but we don't know where to start. We don't need step by step instructions, just a picture or two to give us a general idea of the construction.
Is there anyone out there in the rock world that would be willing to share their home made buffing machine plans?

Thank you for your time and cosideration.

Denise
