Re: Slab saw oil
I've had good luck using a light pure mineral oil from Farm & Fleet for $12.50 per gallon in my 16" saw. Look in the animal / Agriculture section for Agripharm Mineral Oil, Mfr #: AGP30091, Blain #: 181000. F&F said it could be special ordered in 5 gallon containers. If you don't have a Farm & Fleet check with your local Farm / Ag store or vet for "horse laxative". The oil does not contain any sulphur or chorine additives so it is odorless and the viscosity seems right. I was a little worried that misting would be a problem since it does not have an anti-misting additive, but after using it for a year this has never been a problem. F&F can send you the MSDS (material safety data sheet) for the oil so that you can see that it has a high flashpoint and low toxicity. Mineral oil will protect from corrosion, will not spoil or mold, and can be filtered and re-used forever.
All that being said, wearing protective gloves isn't a bad idea when handling oils, but consider avoiding gloves made of latex in case someone in the club has an unknown allergy to latex.
