Whatever you buy will be costly. Your plan is worthy as advancing into working rocks/gems is a very rewarding pasttime and takes you into new and interesting territory in this great hobby of ours. If you aren't in a rock club at present, think of joining one. Much talent available there and by people very willing to give of their accumulated knowledge. Oftentimes, clubs have equipment available for members use. Good way to begin. The Rock Club listing here on the Rock Shop website will show any clubs in your area.
Also, consider buying used equipment to keep initial costs down. Additionally, there are many books available covering all the aspects of your newfound interests.
