I'm sorry, I should have mentioned this stone is already lapidaried and incorporated in a piece of jewelry, so I can't do much in the way of testing on it. It was "found" on a bead dealer's table during the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, so I can't provide a formation or locality for the material. It is actually the identity of the matrix material and not the included pyrite specks that is of interest. I just mentioned the pyrite specks as they could be germane regarding the identity of the material and being so small and dispersed they don't show very well in the photo.
I have a suspicion of what the material is, but haven't mentioned it so as to not influence the ideas and input of others.
