You could see the same effect during the day, too. Hiking along, especially with the sun high, you can see "speckles" abounding on the ground as the sun reflects on the crystals in many rocks. It gets your attention.
You were probably seeing reflections on rock crystals such as with mica caused by moon shine or even "star shine". Nice show. Enjoy.
