hey mark, well i always used a solution of simple green because it really cleans everything really well. it is an excellent degreaser also. i always used a soft bristle brush or a toothbrush to clean my rocks with. the toothbrush is especially good for getting into cracks and crevices that grit can get up into. well on the issue of the rocks bumping into each other, i thought that there was a type of divider device you can attach to your lap but i'm not positive on that one. well take care, Lynne
