Marilyn, The Franklin Museum (NJ) is not far off your route. Collecting for a small fee is allowed on the adjacent Buckwheat Dump.

Also the Sterling Hill Mining Museum is a must for mineral collectors. Conducted tours take about two hours. Two of the stopes are illuminated with UV lights and the walls just light up. The underground part of the tour is all on the adit level, so no up&down is necessary. The fluorescent mineral exhibit at the end of the tour is purportedly the best in the world. Highly recommended.
