Re: newbie headed to arkansas

I had excellent results at both Fiddlers Ridge and Ron Colemans. Found just about all possible crytal combinations and groups between the two. Large 5-8 inchers and big groups if you get down in the layers and work hard but carefully. You need a prode to fish in the clay before u dig them out to avoid dinging them with tools along with shovels sledge, chisels and safety equipment. Gloves and eye protection are a must and a hard hard is required at most pay sites.Quartz is VERY sharp when fractured.
Best time of year to go (for me anyway) is the mid to late fall period since the bugs are less and it's cool but not cold. Spring is good to but you get a lot of thunderstorms then the bug,and the later you go it's gets to hot to be comfortable for most of the day.
I suggest whenever you go to bring along clothes that you are willing to throw away when done and that includes shoes unless they are old leather favorites. The red clay sticks and stains everything and just about every place you stay has a sign "if you have been diging do not wash the clothes here". Otherwise a real blast and if you can not find anything good you would have to be beyond blind.
