Debbie, try making a SMALL scratch with the tip of a knife blade. If it is smithsonite, it should scratch. Then without wiping off the powder in the scratch drop some vinegar on the scratch. If it is smithsonite, the vinegar should bubble (fiz).

There is a possibility that your piece could be hemimorphite; in which case it will scratch, but there would be no bubbles.

I do not believe that it is slag.
