I had the same problem. My son sent some African soapstone carvings to my wife and they arrived in pieces. I used epoxy to assemble them.

You could use auto-body rubbing compound for polishing (I didn't need to polish after fine sanding.) I used felt permanent tip markers, carefully applied and rubbed in to blend and repair the colors.
