Michael, I've been a woodworker longer than a lapidarian, but I can safely say that repairing breaks with virtually no sign of cracks is nearly impossible unless once the sanding step is taken the object is painted. With natural wood (stone?) you can sand until the cows come home (old expression) and the break line remains. Faint, yes, but there. With painted objects, once the repair is made, a coating of matching paint will cover the break line.
