Diane, please scroll down the Rock Talk page to 12/17 and the topic, Lead Dangers. I posed this very question, and the consensus is that, no it's not dangerous but that you should wash your hands after handling any mineral specimen due to a wide variety of toxins than can be present, including such things as arsenic and mercury.
