Re: Rocks in mid TN?
Interestingly, there is a huge variety of lapidary material quite near where you live. June Miller is the owner of Smokey's Mountain Rock Shop at 3155 Sherwood Road outside Sewanee, TN. You can reach her at 931-598-9740 to make an appointment to go "hunt" lapidary material. The entire stock of her and her late husband's business is outside in a spread-out pile about 20 feet wide by 60 feet long. Her current price is $.25 per pound. The variety of material is immense, mostly US, and includes significant amounts of picture jaspers, Montana moss agate, Tennessee agate and even a little Tampa Bay agatized coral. There are myriad other materials; it is a great place to spend hours raking through the rocks. My wife and I have been repeatedly. The most useful tools to bring are buckets to carry your treasures away, a spray bottle or dipping bucket to clean your finds, and three-prong garden cultivators to rake through the material.
