treasure hunting

Hello!

I have recently (in the last few months) been re-inspired to find some beautiful rocks. About 15 years ago I found several beautiful peices of smokey quartz while backpacking in California. It was a chance finding, and ever since have wanted to revisit the joy of finding nature's beautiful hidden treasures. More recently I have become quite interested in the healing properties of gems and various rocks, er, minerals. I know nothing about rocks, but would like to learn how to find areas that I could go in search of different rocks and minerals growing naturally. I would be looking in California, or near Denver, CO. For example, I know there is a big tourmaline mine in San Diego county. I'm not so much interested in a commercial mine such as this; rather, I would like to be able to know what environmental conditions, earth resources or whatever contribute to the natural occurance of different rocks so that I can explore areas local to me and find treasures on my own. If there are areas where rocks or minerals are known to grow that have not been commercialized, I would be open to searching in these areas. Any ideas or insights?
