Polishing rough amethyst points?

I purchased some rough amethyst points that look as thought they have saw? marks down the sides. I'm guessing it is from cutting the points apart.

Can these be polished? Do I need to use a lap machine or something like it to polish them? Is there another way that would be better? Or some way that someone just getting into this that I can do without buying a $300 lap machine?

I don't want to professionally facet them, but I'd like them to look prettier and smoother than they do now.

Thanks for any advice to this amateur rockhound. Virginia
