Re: arkansas quartz crystal and diamond mines?

The Coleman mine gave us the best bang for our buck in March 07. We had collected earlier with another mine out of Mount Ida, but did not have great luck. Of course the 3 boys thought any crystal was awesome and kept yelling for me to come over and help. Once we got to Coleman the foreman (I think his name was John) went over the rules and sent us out. My 8 year old had been digging for 5 minutes and started yelling for me and I ignored him. When he came over he showed me a beautiful tabular crystal with good clarity that was 7 inches in length, 4 inches wide at the base and about 1.5 inches thick. Needless to say that was the best single speciman find of the day. I did find several clusters that were maybe 10-12 inches across with 1 to 2 inch crsytals. take clothes you can throw away as the red dirt does not wash out all the way and if you want a tool bigger than a hand trowel bring it with you. I reccommend buying on of the bushel baskets of dirty crystals and some oxcalic (spelling?) acid.

As for the diamond mine we did not have time on that trip, but it is on our list for next year.
