Did you cab or carve the opal? Or are you just trying to polish up one that you purchased, possibly tumbled? I can't say for sure without being able to inspect your opal first hand, but I suspect the issue you are having with lack of a polish developing may be due to scratches remaining from a previous stage of grinding and shaping.
