Sea glass, beach glass, mermaid's tears

Hello all...

Ok, so I'm sitting on a plethora of what we call "sea glass" that my family and I collected on the beaches of Lake Superior this summer. While others were frantically searching for agates, we spent hours near the frigid waters of the lake collecting vast amounts of beautiful sea glass in red, blue, green, white and brown. Each color represents SOME kind of garbage that was cast off of ships or dumped into the lake before anyone realized the hazards of pollution. We found out that some of this glass is more than 100 years old and was churnned up from the depths of the lake for us to collect!

I realize that we didn't technically collect "rocks" but they are just as precious to us! What I would like to do is to polish these little gems but I don't know how. Our son has a rock tumbler from the Smithsonian but the first few steps don't really apply. I don't need to grind them or smooth the edges as the lake has actually done that for us. What we have are smooth little bits of glass that are ready for a shiny coat to bring out their natural beauty.

Does anyone know if I can just use the polishing step(s) from our store bought rock tumbler, and if so - am I jeopardizing the beauty of our glass? We would like to use the rocks in a collective family project (to be determined yet) that reminds us of the hours we spent digging holes along the north shore.

Thanks for your input!
