flat lapping help....

I've tried to scan through the archives and didn't find any information relative to this subject. If it has been covered somewhere and I missed it, I do appologize. I haven't been actually polishing slabs for very long, although the interest has been there for a long, long, time. So, O.K., here we go. After lapping slabs, or halves for a period of time in gradually finer and finer grit, and after the required period of tin oxide polish, what is the best way to remove the grit residue on the back side of the slab? I've been sitting here with a bucket of water and a scrub brush, but no matter how long or hard I scrub, there always seems to be more residue that will come off after sitting for a few hours or a day or whatever. What little secret am I missing?
