Re: Smoky quartz

Work in what way? Create it?
Well take regular quartz and irradiate it (Gamma) and it turns smokey.
Cuts and polishes like any other Quartz.Hardness will vary slightly depending on location but is relatively consistent with other quartz family members.Tumbles like any rock of the same hardness
Search for it, it's just about anywhere where regular quartz is present provided that there was a natural source of radiation present at some time during or since it deposition. We go to Granite outcrops and look within the coarse grained areas (pegmatites), for vugs which often contain smokey quartz with Pink Feldspar or Amazonite along with several radioactive minerals and an occasional Florite. It is very common in New Hampshire and occurs throughout the northeast where I rockhound.
