On my flat lap, I put the disks on the backing plate first, aligning it carefully. I pulled the backing partially off, aligning it, then dropped the edge where I had pulled it off, then lifted it and pulled it the rest of the way off and smoothed it down. Then I cut the hole in it using an x-acto knife.
