rockhounding for opal...Newbie questions

I am planning a trip down to Spencer ID soon and would like to hound around for opals. I would like to know how you go about finding opals in the rough. Are there any tips or tricks to finding it? What does the surrounding rock look like? Also, are there any other rocks/gems of interest close to or in Spencer? Any good spots for opal?

I'm not too interested in going to a touristy type place and 'mine' for opals. I kind of like doing the hard work myself! :)

Thanks-Becky
