Re: beginner trip

Dee Dee, You dinn't mention your starting point but most important is you said "absolute beginner". In S Dakota near rapid city are gold mines with tours, also for a real rock experience don't miss the Crazy Horse monument carving in progress. There are many areas near that area that are covered with pebbles and you can easily find jaspers and agate and many other interesting rocks including fossils, You should find a locval rock shop for specific directions. You can findthe rock shop locations by using google searches for rock shops in the states your visiting.
After S. Dakota there are many areas on your way to the south west but you said absolute beginner and with out a guide you could be dissapointed not to mention getting very lost. In utah there are fee areas for topaz or many other rocks again check with local rock shops.
If you get near the petrified forest, out side the National park are fee areas but the park rangers will deny they exist. Arkansa has the Crater of Diamonds park and many quartz crastal mine perfect for beginners.
Lastly try the Alexandria Mo./ Keokuk Iowa area for fee geode mines. But use the google search and you will get specific details.
