Re: Tumbling Gemstones

Barbara,

I can answer your question about how long to run the tumbler. You should run it continuously. It is designed to be run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That is why the erosion process that takes natural many, many years is sped up into several weeks. You should run the tumbler starting with course grit and each week proceed to the next grit size. Make sure that any stones you put in the tumbler are of similar hardness. If you do not, you will find the softer materials completely eroded away by the harder materials and in fact have become additional grit in some cases. Make sure that each time you change grits, you thoroughly clean the tumbler of any remaining grit particles. If even a few grit are left from a courser grit, it will scratch the stones and effect the final finish. Hope this has answered some of your questions. Good luck with your tumbling.
