Need help with identification

Hi everyone,
A quick note before I start: I'm very new to rockhounding. That being said, I found a neat specimen when I was out looking for chiastolite in Lancaster, Mass. I was wondering what the little pieces in the rock are. Dark, waxy, and very soft; I can nearly scratch it with my fingernail. It seems a lot like soapstone. They are mostly rod shaped and about a half inch long. There seems to be one large rod embedded in the stone (see second picture). Thanks in advance!
