Re: Family vacation

Get a copy of Rick Jacquot's book Rock, Gem & Mineral Collecting Sites In Western North Carolina. It was available through Amazon.com last time I checked and has GPS coordinates for sites. A great guide to 53 site throughout the area. I suggest concentrating on Little Pine Garnet Mine and the Ray Mine. Little Pine charges $10.00 a day to collect, but you might get 20 pounds of garnets for the effort. The Ray Mine is free collecting on park service land. Lots of other sites listed-just a couple of favorites. Stay away form the "bucket" mines in Hiddenite and Little Switzerland, all salted material. You could check out the Cherokee Sapphire mine near Franklin, NC for native corundum and garnets also.
