Thinning the epoxy allows it to get into fissures by capillary action, it doesn't weaken the bond (at least, I don't think it weakens it). I believe it also slows the hardening. But when you heat the chip or slab, the toluene evaporates and the epoxy hardens. I hope it works for you.
