What era does silica appear in geological earth

Hi all:
Lots of press on the discovery of alot of silca on Mars and conclusion that there was water on it. I was wondering if anyone knows when silica appears in the layers of the Grand Canyon? Since it reveals so far back in geological time, would think there would be the 1st water appear silican rock layer?? After the formation of Zircon.

Love to learn about rocks still!

Now I know that for some reason, there must be water to form silicon. Just forgot what it was??
How does Nasa conclude there was water in large quantity on Mars due to the discovery of silicon rocks??
Very intereesting!!!
