The ores do develop an iridescent surface over time, but most of the material that is sold has been helped along a bit. In the July-August 1981 article on fakes by Pete Dunn et al. in the Mineralogical Record, they state that boiling bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is used to produce the iridescence. (Some oxidizing acids should also work.)
