How to orient a star Ruby for a cabochon

Does anyone have any information that would help a beginner learn how to orient a Ruby to tell if it will star, and then how to make the star come out.

I had heard that the asterism shows up as lines like inclusion or like rutile inclusions. I had also heard that they need to be oriented a certain way to make the star come out. The gentleman that told me this said something about looking at the rough to find the lines, then turning the piece over to use it as the base, and the star would show up when the dome was formed and polished.

I have some Ruby and Sapphire from North Carolina that I am going to try to make cabs from, and don't know how to check for asterism, or how to orient, or cut the stone.

I just received my flat machine, and plan on practicing on some junk stuff first.

If there is some info on the net, I would apprecaite knowing where to look.

Thanx
