"Topo Bingo" Map Reading Game

We have discussed on this board several times the importance of map and compass skills. I am teaching an "Intro to Cartography" class to 8th graders at an Environmental Education camp tomorrow and I ran across a great teaching tool that I plan to use. I thought I would pass it along for those of you who may want to pass along map reading skills. It says its for 3rd grade to adult, so maybe Wayne should give it a try when he's not out swatting hornets.

The game is called "Topo Bingo" and was created by Leslie C. Gordon of the USGS. The whole thing is downloadable from http://interactive2.usgs.gov/learningweb/fun/bingo.htm

The way it works is just like Bingo, only the game cards are portions of real USGS 7.5 minute quad maps and the "numbers" drawn are individual topo map symbols. The first player to find four of the called symbols cries out "Topo" and wins. There are 54 simbols and 22 "bingo card" maps. No, #9 is not one of the symbols :)

Anyway, after the lecture and fill-in-the-blanks worksheet, I plan to give this a try. I'll let you know how it turns out.

BTW, the kids also learn how to use a compass in another class at the same camp.

KOR and don't get lost...
